Just wanted to give a shout out to our local DVD store: Video Ezy at Chatswood.
They’re just down on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Neridah Street near Chatswood Chase.
Why this post?
Well, two reasons. The first is mentioned in my disclaimer at the bottom, but the second – and most important – is because [...]

Shower Thinking

November 9, 2009Personal
Thumbnail image for Shower Thinking

UPDATE: I’ve been using the AquaNotes Aqua Notepad for the last few weeks, and highly recommend it!
I think best when I’m standing. And particularly well when I’m having a shower. In fact – but don’t picture this – some of my best ideas have been captured only as a result of me rushing out of [...]

Why I don’t read newspapers

November 29, 2008Main

I don’t usually read the papers. Or even keep up with current affairs. In general I’m pretty out of touch with what’s going on in the world.
But yesterday I bought the weekend papers. I’m on holidays, and thought it’d be nice to catch up on world events. What a mistake!
Nothing but page after page of [...]

PERSONAL: Holidays

November 28, 2008Main

I finished up at Elcom yesterday. I’m on a week’s break, before I start my next role at nsquared on 8 Dec.
So, what will I do for the week? Well, no plans to go anywhere – I’ll be staying right here at home, relaxing and catching up on things. Here’s a few of the ‘chores’ [...]

PERSONAL: Two weeks ago… and a new job

November 20, 2008Main

In a micro kind of way I feel my life has been ‘on hold’ for the last month.
Two weeks ago I had urgent surgery for something that turned up unexpectedly, and I’m pleased to say things seem OK now. I’m feeling pretty good, and even started back at the gym tonight. I was able [...]

My ideal role

October 20, 2008Main

This post follows on from my previous where I explained that I was leaving Elcom, and the reasons behind that decision. This post covers my thoughts on the ideal role for me. But if you don’t have time to read it all, here’s the summary:
Ideal role: Looking to contribute at a senior management level in [...]

Leaving Elcom – looking for my next role

October 20, 2008Elcom

Last week, following probably the worst IT downturn in the last 8 years I decided to leave Elcom. Crazy huh? Yeah, it may turn out to be foolish, but in this post I aim to explain why, and in the following post, what I‘m looking for as my next step.
I thought I’d put this [...]

REVIEW: ClearContext

September 21, 2008Main

If I were a software company producing productivity enhancing tools I’d love to have a tag line of:
Use ‘X’ – it’ll save you at least a minute a day!

I think this would be interesting for a number of reasons:

It’s believable
People would be able to easily verify the claim (much better than that ‘improves performance by [...]

Michael Kordahi’s Delicate Genius blog stolen

September 4, 2008Main

I’m really feeling for Michael Kordahi at the moment. His Delicate Genius domain has been stolen and his blog is now getting choked up with spam. This is really sad. (I’ve deliberately not linked to it here)
I caught up with him for a few minutes tonight and he was pretty cut up about it. At [...]

PERSONAL: Health and Fitness

August 16, 2008Main

Warning: personal ramblings about my health and fitness (or lack thereof) ahead – nothing technical here.
Back at the gym
I went back to the gym again yesterday after a month off (not by choice mind you, but due to being really sick for 2 weeks, and then visiting the hospital most nights for the last few [...]

Internet hairdressers

August 9, 2008Link

I’m sure this must be available already, but I haven’t seen it anywhere (leave me a comment if you know of one)…
As I was getting my hair cut this morning I really wished I could have been surfing the net (my hair dresser isn’t very chatty and I kinda get uncomfortable looking at myself [...]

REVIEW: Premium Economy on Air New Zealand

April 27, 2008Personal

On my recent trip to the MVP Summit I flew Premium Economy class over to the US. Premium Economy is new for Australia-USA trips and is only available via Air New Zealand (to LA) and JetStar (Star Class to Honolulu) as far as I know. Qantas will be offering the class later in the year. [...]

Behind on blogs – too much information

April 22, 2008Blog

Following on from my last post, it’s interesting to see how far behind I’ve drifted in my blog reading over the last few weeks. Over 50K unread posts… Even TechCrunch (my first blog stop every day) has 215 unread posts.

A number of these will be easily dismissed (eg I subscribe to general feeds like [...]

Twitter versus Blogs

April 22, 2008Personal

I find it interesting that the more time I spend on Twitter, the less time I spend directly reading and writing blogs. The reason for this (besides the obvious time factor) is that I am finding more and more that most things I need to know are alerted to me via Twitter. This isn’t to [...]

A quick catch up with Frank Arrigo

April 20, 2008Microsoft

There’s plenty to talk about after the MVP Summit last week. But that’ll have to wait. For now, you can either read the shenanigans courtesy of Schnubbs’ blog, or… you can watch this quick 2 min video where a bunch of us caught up with Frank Arrigo. Can you believe he’s been in Seattle for [...]

Being the dumbest person in the room

February 14, 2008Personal

I really liked John Galloway's post on The Man who Knew Too Much, in which he outlines the wrong assumptions and actions we can sometimes make/take when surrounded by smart people, being too busy, etc.
However, the item that caught my attention was his link to the strategy of aspiring to be the dumbest person in [...]

Australia said sorry today

February 13, 2008Personal

We finally said sorry today. I agree that we removed a "stain from the soul of Australia".
An apology is a liberating event. Forgiveness is the healer.
Never underestimate the power of words.

COFFEE: Caffeine linked to miscarriage

February 1, 2008Personal

Summary: Several studies have shown that consumption of caffeine (equivalent to 1 cup of coffee) is associated with a twofold increase in miscarriage.
Possible good news: The studies may have been skewed by women with healthy pregnancies reducing their caffeine intake due to morning sickness.
New Scientist reports this in the 26 January 2008 edition (p19 bottom [...]
