THOUGHT: When will recruiters take to Twitter?

March 31, 2008Main

These days it seems the best indication of when a particular social media source has reached it’s used by date is when recruiters are using it more than your ‘real’ connections
Take LinkedIn for example. A year ago, this was a valuable tool, allowing us all to connect to business associates. These days, [...]

TIP: Fixing IE so it doesn’t go mental with lots of tabs open

March 27, 2008Main

This one has bugged me for ages – you open up stacks of tabs in IE and after a while weird things start happening. Perhaps its the menu not appearing on some tabs, another tab has missing toolbars, etc.
And it affects other programs as well including File Explorer, shortcuts, and in my case SharePoint Designer [...]

March 27, 2008Clarity

The main interest in this article from Mary Jo is not about CRM (who cares about a name change after all) but rather how Microsoft are clarifying their terms:
Live: Consumer focus
Online: Business & Enterprise focus, hosted by Microsoft
Hosted services: hosted by Microsoft partners
And don’t miss the revenue sharing snippet at the bottom – Microsoft will [...]

I’ve had issues recently with Outlook crashing when I shut it down. Initially I thought this was due to a rogue Outlook Addin (eg I’ve got Xobni, ClearContext, OutTwit and others installed). So I went through systematically getting rid of them. Put the problem persisted.
Finally I found the issue was to do with the actual [...]

Yes, it's officially supported. But I don't think it is installed by default – your installer still has to do that – however I may be wrong…

March 18, 2008Link

You’ve no doubt used SitePoint before. So I probably don’t need to tell you about their excellent CSS Reference. And it’d be silly to think you don’t also know about their freshly released HTML Reference. Great resources.

Microsoft Announces New Accessibility Tools

March 17, 2008Link

Great to see more developer stuff coming out that focuses on (or at least highlights) the need for improving accessibility of web sites.
This particular site (released a week or so ago) is Microsoft’s take on it. If this were to come from Google or Mozilla it would of course be praised for its progressiveness, but [...]

Microsoft licenses Flash Lite

March 17, 2008Link

Microsoft is licensing Flash Lite for use on mobile devices. This announcement can only be a good thing right? The more options I have on my mobile the better. It doesn’t mean I won’t be using Silverlight of course (nice double negative for you).

Get ClearContext for free

March 14, 2008Link

I’ve been using ClearContext for the last two months and I love it. But it costs over $100 (Australian). That’s a lot to pay. But I paid it and haven’t regretted it.
However, what if you could get a license for free? Well you can. Check out the ClearContext blog for details – you just have [...]

Elcom upgrade of Microsoft CRM 3.0 to 4.0

March 14, 2008Elcom

Brad Marsh has a few screenshots of our upgrade experience from Microsoft CRM 3.0 to 4.0
Summary: it went extremely well.
My comment: CRM 4.0 seems to be slower than 3.0 but since it’s running on an old server, it was expected (new server infrastructure coming in the next few weeks – Yay!). Overall, no real [...]

TIP: How to uninstall IE8

March 9, 2008Main

If, like me, you rushed out and installed Internet Explorer 8 last week, then you may, like me again, be regretting it.

IE8 has been slow, unstable and ugly. By ugly I mean that most of the sites I viewed looked really bad (or didn't render at all). The price of progress you may say? After [...]

TIP: How to create a Microsoft LiveID with your own domain name

March 6, 2008Main

This one crops up from time to time. You need a Microsoft LiveID for use with say Windows Messenger. But when you go through the sign up process, you only have options for a .hotmail.com or .live.com domain on your alias.

If you have registered your own domain name, then ideally you want your LiveID profile [...]

TIP: The Top Mistake of public speaking

March 6, 2008Main

I mentioned in a previous post that I was really nervous when I presented at the Microsoft Launch last week.

This actually caught me by surprise, because I am usually pretty comfortable presenting in front of groups.

At home that night I was wondering why I had suddenly tensed up. Was it the large crowd (the room [...]
